I Tried Mouth Taping for a Week. Here's Everything That Happened.

As a working mum, sleep-in's are scarce. And when you throw endless life admin, cooking, cleaning, organising your kids lives, and trying to make time for yourself into the mix, the idea of bad sleep is enough to make you spiral.

I wanted sleep that actually felt like sleep, within the 7 hours I had each night.

Is that too much to ask? I decided to find out.

For one week I made it a habit to wear Moisturizing Mouth Tape to bed. Here is what changed, what didn't, and things I learnt along the way.

The Challenge: Can I actually get more out of my sleep with a piece of tape?

I'd been seeing Mouth Tape as a rising trend over the past couple months. Fitness influences, lifestyle podcasters, some old guy at the gym. Are they on to something? Or is this just all another gimmick that is going to make me look… well… a bit stupid?

I have tried the silk eye masks, essential oils on my wrists, lavender pillow sprays, and so much else to optimize my sleep, but it all ends up on my bedside table gathering a thin layer of dust along with my hopes and dreams of a deep sleep.

I didn't want another random thing that didn't work.

That's when I saw Moisturizing Mouth Tape.

As a sceptic who had (clearly) been hurt many times by trendy products, I was hesitant. Would it be scary to tape my mouth shut while I slept? Would it rip my skin to take off? Would it even do anything for me?

Well, I was desperate, and there was only one way to find out. And, thanks to their 31 night risk-free period, I knew I would get my money back if I hated it. Done. Added to cart.

The first night arrived, and armed with my new bestie for the week, I hit the sack. There were now three of us in this bed: Me, my husband, and a red sticky thing ready to ruin all of his plans (sorry babe).

The material felt so silky and light weight. I also appreciated the hole in the centre which I could breathe through if I really tried, so I felt a bit more comfortable about the whole thing.

Off to sleep I went.

I woke up the next morning, ready to grab a sip of water like I always do, but two things were different: 1. I couldn't open my mouth to drink (strange feeling, but I got used to it), and 2. I didn't even need water because my mouth wasn't dried up. WIN!

Pleasantly surprised, I waddled to the bathroom to take it off. After seeing some people use other mouth tapes online I was a bit scared to do this because of the pain, but I couldn't drop my kids off at school looking like this, so there wasn't really a choice, was there?

Turns out, my fears were unfounded. It came off with no pain at all. And not only were my lips still intact, but they looked so healthy.

After doing some research (reading the packet), I learnt that the adhesive contains Aloe Vera, Vitamin E, and Collagen Peptides. This is what made it so painless to remove, and what did some serious damage control to my chapped lips overnight.

I was impressed.

The next thing I wanted to know: Did it stop my snoring? For this, I needed an expert with insider information, so I went to my husband. He said I barely moved all night, let alone made a single noise. Tick!

After doing some more research (…reading the website) I learnt mouth tape can stop you from snoring by holding your mouth shut so it doesn't dry out (WIN! again), and preventing structures in your mouth from vibrating when you breath in.

The next couple of days using mouth tape went fairly normal, but I did find myself saying yes to things I ususally said no to in the past due to tiredness: an extra set of squats during my workout, a Saturday morning coffee with my friend, an evening walk with my husband.

So, this started out as a week of trying mouth tape, but I can confidently say there will be many more weeks to come.

I look forward to seeing how it affects my mood and energy levels throughout the day, and also assists with bad breath (which was an interesting benefit I saw on the website – it helps the oral microbiome).

If you're like me and need your sleep, I do genuinely recommend this mouth tape for oral dryness, chapped lips, snoring, and sleep quality.

They have a 31-night risk-free period where if you don't love your mouth tape, you will get a seamless refund. So why not?

Thanks for reading. Go get the sleep you deserve.
